Succinylation by Microwave Technique

A weighed amount of succinic anhydride is mixed with weighed quantity of starch premixed with the required amount of distilled water (a maximum of 15% on starch dry wt. basis). The sample is taken in a glass beaker and subjected to microwave irradiation at a power level of 500 W, with stirring of the sample after every two minutes of exposure. After the required time of exposure, the samples are taken out, cooled to room temperature and dispersed in water – ethanol mixture (1:1). The pH of the resulting reaction mixture is adjusted to 6.5 - 7.0 with aqueous sodium hydroxide solution (0.5 N). The product is washed 3 - 4 times with water-ethanol mixture, then with pure ethanol and filtered under vacuum. The products are dried in an air oven at 55°C overnight and powdered.
