Starch Citrates by Microwave Technique



Weighed quantity of citric acid is dissolved in water and pH is adjusted to 3.5 with 10N NaOH. This solution is added to a weighed quantity of powdered starch and the mixture is transferred to a Petri dish and conditioned overnight at room temperature. The Petri dish is then placed in an air oven and dried at 50°C for 6-8h to 5- 10% moisture. The mixture is then finely ground using a mortar and pestle and subjected to microwave irradiation for the required time duration at different temperature levels. The product is washed with distilled water several times till the washings are free of non-esterified acid and filtered. The washed starch is dried at 50°C overnight in an air oven and powdered.
