Starch Phosphates by Microwave Technique

Process


The salts, sodium dihydrogen phosphate dihydrate (NaH2PO4. 2H2O) and anhydrous disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na2HPO4) are dissolved in distilled water and pH is adjusted to 6.0. Fnely powdered starch is slurried in the salt solution and stirred for 10min using a mechanical stirrer. The slurry is filtered with suction and the filter cake is dried overnight at 50°C in an air oven. The starch-salt mixture is then powdered and dried at 65°C for 90 min. The dried mixture was subjected to microwave irradiation for various time durations. The samples are stirred thoroughly after every 2min of microwave exposure. After the completion of reaction, samples are cooled to room temperature and slurried in aqueous methanol and stirred for 30min. The product is recovered by filtration on a Buchner funnel and dehydrated by washing with absolute ethanol. The product is dried in an air oven at 55°C overnight.
