Dodecenyl Succinylation in Aqueous Medium

Process

The starch is slurried with distilled water at room temperature and pH is adjusted and maintained at 8.5-9.0 by the addition of 2% sodium hydroxide solution. Dodecenyl succinic anhydride (DDSA)/octadecenyl succinic anhydride (OSA) is slowly added with stirring and pH adjustment. Stirring is continued for 4h. After the reaction, the slurry is brought to pH 6.5 with 5% HCl, filtered, washed with water and dried in an air oven at 55°C overnight.
