Crosslinking with Epichlorohydrin



A weighed quantity of finely powdered dry starch is made into a slurry by adding distilled water/DMF to adjust a solid concentration of 50 % (w/v) and stirred using a mechanical stirrer. The pH of the slurry is adjusted to 10.5 using dilute sodium hydroxide solution (0.1 N) and EPI is then added to give. The reaction was carried out at 45°C for 2 h with constant stirring on a magnetic stirrer. Upon completion of reaction, the pH of the slurry was adjusted to 6.0 using 0.1 N HCl, filtered, washed several times with distilled water and was dried overnight in an air oven at 45°C. In one set of experiments, TBAB (10% based on starch dry weight) was added before the addition of EPI and all other steps were performed in the same manner as described above.
